About National Bike Week, Galway

Galway Bike Week is expected to take place from the 11th – 19 May 2024 as part of National Bike Week, with cycling events all over Galway county, organised by local authorities, community groups, charities and cycling groups.

Now in its fourteenth year, the Galway Bike Festival promotes cycling for everyone, supports a dynamic cycling culture in the city and county and aims to increase the number of cyclists in Galway. Galway Bike Festival is a celebration of all that is great about cycling – it’s good for your health, good for the city, and good for the environment.

Galway Bike Week will feature a broad range of different events catering for beginners, second time around cyclists, leisure bikers, and the more serious bicycle enthusiasts. The festival endeavours to attract and encourage cyclists, particularly new cyclists of all age groups to discover the enjoyment and benefits of cycling, promoting a sustainable, healthy and low-carbon means of travel.

Bike United Bike Valet
In 2023, Galway Cycling Campaign hosted a ‘Bike United Bike Valet’ and free entry for kids on bikes with Galway United supporters at the Eamonn Deacy Park, Terryland.

Seven Castles Looped Cycle Heritage Tour
Bike Week 2024 expects to see the return of the Seven Castles Looped Cycle Heritage Tour to Galway. Also known as ‘Slí na gCaisleán’ (‘The Way of the Castles’ ) the cycle is a guided off-the-beaten-track heritage excursion along a looped trail across beautiful countryside that encompasses seven castles on the north and eastern side of Galway city and on into Galway county.

The tour, organised by the Ballinfoile Mór Community Organic Garden, will start from the ‘Plots’ on the Dyke Road which was the site of former urban allotments in decades gone by, then onto Terryland Castle before undertaking a forty km looped cycle route that has castles at Menlo, Cloonacauneen, Killeen, Ballybrit, Castlegar and Ballindooley. The programme includes free bike checks, fun cycles, lunchtime city cycles, heritage cycles, bike maintenance workshops, cycling events for young adults and children with physical disabilities, school cycling events and much more. Organised by Galway City Council and Galway County Council, community groups, charities and cycling groups, there will be something for every age and ability, with cycling events taking place throughout the week all over Galway.

Athenry Bike Week

The Wheels of Athenry and volunteers hosted two Bike Week events in Athenry. CycleFest Athenry is a two-hour family-friendly event with face-painting, bubbles, and loads of fun in Athenry Town Park from 1pm to 3pm. During the Wee Wheelers event, the youngest cyclists can ride their balance bikes and trikes around the park securely. An experienced mechanic will be on hand to perform a Bike to Basics health check on dusty bikes hauled out of the back of sheds.

During the afternoon, the annual Pedal Parade takes place. The start point is Market Square for a pleasant cycling around Athenry’s historic streets for people of all ages and abilities. Super Bikes for Super Heroes is the theme this year. The best-dressed bikes and riders will get rewards. Have no time to customize your bike? Don’t be concerned! A Pimp Your Bike station will be set up so that everyone may join in the fun.

Gort Bike Week

During bike week Gort Cycle Trails hosted a community cycle from Gort Railway Station to Coole Park for coffee and cake, and back.

This ‘mini greenway’ is 9 kilometers long. Because it was such a hit last year, the number of participants will be limited to 50. Visit www.gortcycletrails.com to register. Gort Cycle Trails will also offer three two-hour Basics for Cycling seminars for new, apprehensive, and experienced cyclists (dates to be confirmed). Cycle safety, bike balance, signaling, and other vital topics will be covered in these seminars to assist people feel comfortable cycling around town.
