A film festival for feature films and shorts, The Galway Film Fleadh, Ireland’s leading film festival, is a six-day international event, held every July and welcomes a diversity of films from around the world. 2024 marks the 36th Galway Film Fleadh, and the central goal of the festival remains unchanged: to bring together audiences and filmmakers within an intimate environment and share a common experience.  In-person screenings will take place in the heart of Galway city, at the Pálás Cinema and Town Hall Theatre.

The 2024 festival will offer 80 thrilling foreign and Irish feature films. World premieres are expected make up a 25% of those. The majority of the selected films are from debut feature directors and there are also over 100 new short film. As always, a main aim is to highlight diverse and up-and-coming voices in cinema while serving as a launching pad for fresh talent.

The festival has confirmed that the winners of its best live-action and animated shorts awards will make it onto the long list for Oscar consideration, as in previous years.

 

What to expect at Galway Film Fleadh 📽

The Fleadh is very much a filmmaker’s festival and attracts directors, actors, cinematographers and artists of all generations and cultural backgrounds, who present their work before their peers. Celebrating it’s 36th birthday in 2024, the central goal of the Galway Film Fleadh remains unchanged to bring together audiences and filmmakers within an intimate environment and share a common experience, the wonder of cinema. The Fleadh’s diverse audience is made up of the general cinema-going public, film buff’s, student film makers, industry professionals and invited guests. Events and screenings take place online insted of the usual venues at the Pálás cinema, Town Hall Theatre, IMC Galway and Eyre Square, Galway.

Festival guests have included such stars as Martin Sheen, Amanda Plummer, Brendan Gleeson, Anjelica Huston, Michael Fassbender, Peter O’Toole, Jessica Lange, Bill Pullman, Jeremy Irons, Kathy Bates, Paul Schrader, Robert Towne, Matt Dillon, Stephen Frears, Maureen O’Hara, Anthony Minghella, Rutger Hauer, Arthur Penn, Gabriel Byrne, Donal McCann, Pierce Brosnan, Michael Winterbottom, Woody Harrelson, Sir Richard Attenborough, Michael Moore, Oliver Reed, Jim Sheridan and Neil Jordan to name but a few.
