The Shannon estuary is home to Ireland’s only resident group of bottlenose dolphins. Over 100 dolphins have been identified using the estuary at different times; calves are born each year and are usually encountered in the groups observed. Cruises depart from the Kilrush marina on board the new vessel “Dolphin Discovery”. The trip takes about 2 hours, passing the islands of Hog and Scattery on the quest to locate the dolphins which are successfully seen on over 98% of the trips. Kilrush and Carrigaholt are the main access locations for those who wish to view the large group of bottlenose dolphins that reside in the Shannon Estuary. This school of breeding dolphins is unique to Ireland and is the most accessible group of dolphins in Europe.
