Connemara Sea Week (21st - 31st October 2011)

Connemara Sea WeekConnemara Sea Week is a celebration of our Marine Heritage which takes place over two weekends - an exciting blend of myth, magic and madness. Conference held in local primary school over the bank holiday weekend, with poets, storytellers, painters, scientists and musicians discussing matters maritime. It will be a weekend of talking and a little walking. There will be pub gigs, concerts, workshops for music and sean nós dance. There will also be a youth concert. Vibrant schools programmes are also part of the week, with soccer tournaments for adults and children.

Throughout the week, there will be a vibrant schools programme with dance teacher, Carol Langstaff from America, Pete Molyneaux from Galway Youth Theatre, Niko Brown and Martin Brunsden internationally-acclaimed performers for young people.

A new feature for this year's Sea Week will be inputs from Scuba Dive West, who will be putting on a number of special programmes, K2 - the amazing Adventure Centre will also be putting on a special programme as will John & phil Mongan who run the Oceans Alive Boat & Country Museum. These programmes are being run at a special rate to celebrate Sea Week, and booking is essential.

Tuesday, 23rd October, will feature the annual Chess Competition for U10 and U14 which takes place at Letterfrack National School at 19.00. Open to all young people.

The Bank Holiday Weekend kicks off with a Oiche Chonamara in the Bards Den at 21.45 with the great Johnny Connolly on box, Mattie Joe Sheamais pipes/vocals, Marcus Hernon, flute, and a blast of Sean Nos Dancers.

The whole weekend is wrapped in the best of traditiional music. Look out for the Hostel Gig with Noel Shine and Mary Greene with great food and music, all for €20. Great excitement also for Sean Tyrrell's one-man show on the life and times of John Boyle O'Reilly on Sunday, at 21.00 in Letterfrack National School.
