The annual Christmas market will again return to the centre of Galway city from November 25th - December 18th 2011. In a simiar style to the festivals that occur every year in cities like Budapest, Frankfurt, Edinburgh and Vienna the traditional street market is associated with the celebration of Christmas during the four weeks of Advent. These markets originated in Germany and Alsace but are now being held in major cities throughout the world in the run up to Christmas day.
This year the centre of Galway city will be transformed into a winter wonderland. It will be a classic Continental Christmas market with over 28 different countries represented, and up to 80 stalls selling a wide variety of crafts, gifts, and stocking fillers such as bohemian crystal, wooden toys, scented candles, hand-made jewellery, ceramic mugs, hats, scarves, traditional puppets and Christmas tree ornaments.
There will be fresh hot food and drink on sale including German beer at a traditional German bier keller, mulled wine and seasonal food such as mince pies and hot sausages. There will also be a Santa’s Grotto, an entertainment area, and all associated services will take place within the perimeters of Eyre Square.
