Galway International Oyster Festival 2009

Galway Oyster Festival The Galway International Oyster Festival takes place this year from 24th to 27th September 2009. Enjoy four days and nights at the world renowned Galway International Oyster Festival. For the best in gourmet seafood, live music and the best Guinness in town, it has to be the Galway Oyster Festival.

The 55th Galway International Oyster Festival is one of the premier events on the Galway Festival calendar, when people from all over the world descend on the city to sample the world famous oysters of Galway Bay and the legendary craic of the West of Ireland. You are guaranteed a weekend of non-stop entertainment which features national and international top-class artists, cabaret and dancing.

The festival started in 1954; in 1960 the film director John Huston is said to have consumed 3,000 oysters; and in 1982 over 40,000 oysters were eaten in one sitting.

Over the four days, the festival hosts the World Oyster Opening Championship, an annual beauty contest to select the Festival Pearl, a Mardi Gras Party at the Radisson Blu Hotel with Champagne, Guinness and Oyster reception and an electrifying line up of top class artists, an afternoon Marquee Reception (with more Guinness and Oysters) and the grand finale, the Gala Ball.

The Oyster Festival is undoubtedly a world food event and a great time for visiting Galway.
