Gateway to The Western Way

Maum (An Mám in Irish) in Connemara is a lovely wooded town land beside some great fishing lakes. The ancient woods give the place a magical feel, overshadowed by the Maamturk Mountains with their numerous pre-historic and early historic sites.

Walking the Western Way

The Western Way, a long distance walking trail will take you from the southern end of the Maam Valley to the ancient site of Mámean. On the way to Leenane you will see a signpost for ‘Leaba Pháiric’ (Patrick’s bed), a rock recess and ‘Tobar Pháraic’ (Patrick’s well) which mark a place of pilgrimage, they were traditionally visited on the last Sunday in July, but less so nowadays.

White O’ Morn Cottage

White O’ Morn Cottage, nestled in Ternakill, Maam, Co Galway, holds a special place in cinematic history as the romantic haven of Mary Kate Danaher and Sean Thornton in the iconic 1952 film “The Quiet Man,” starring Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne. Dating back to the pre-1820s, this charming thatched cottage has sadly fallen into disrepair over the years, despite local community efforts to restore it. Maureen O’Hara herself expressed a heartfelt desire for its restoration. Today, the remnants of this beloved cottage can still be seen on the left side of the road, approximately 100 meters from the village when approaching from the Maam Valley.

Keane’s Bar

Also don’t miss the opportunity to visit Keane’s pub, built in 1820 by the famous Scottish engineer Alexander Nimmo as his residence and pay office. 1820 was the year he was commissioned by the British Government to bring relief to the poverty-stricken West. This led to Connemara having the first roads and bridges built in the west.
