Arigna Mining Experience
Journey Into the Heart of Ireland’s Coal Heritage ⚒️⛰️
The Arigna Mining Experience, located in the scenic hills of North Roscommon, offers a powerful and evocative journey through 400 years of mining history. What makes this destination truly unique is that the tours are led by former coal miners, men who spent their working lives in these very tunnels. As you descend into the narrow passages, your guide shares firsthand accounts of the “black gold” era, explaining the grueling conditions, the camaraderie of the workers, and the technical evolution of mining from the 1700s until the final closure in 1990.

Perched high on a hillside with breathtaking views over Lough Allen and the surrounding five counties, the site also features a world-class exhibition space and a renewable energy center, making it a compelling stop for history buffs and families alike.

FAQs about Arigna Mining Experience
Is the tour accessible for those with mobility issues?
Surprisingly, yes. Unlike many underground mines, Arigna has been modified to be fully wheelchair and stroller accessible. The tunnels are level, and the walkways are surfaced, making it one of the few underground mining tours in Europe that can be enjoyed by everyone.
How long does the experience last?
The guided underground tour lasts approximately 45 minutes. However, you should allow at least 90 minutes for your total visit to explore the photographic exhibitions, the renewable energy displays, and to enjoy the views from the café.
Is the tour claustrophobic or scary for children?
While the tunnels are enclosed, they are well-lit and have been widened for visitors. Most children find the experience exciting rather than scary, particularly the light and sound effects used to demonstrate mining blasts. However, if you have severe claustrophobia, you may find parts of the tunnel system challenging.

About the Exhibition Space
Descending into the depths of the earth through some of the narrowest coal seams in Europe, the Arigna mines offer an in-depth insight into over 300 years of coal production. An exhibition space explains geological systems and runs through a history of energy production, before moving on to the workings behind renewable energy solutions. The café enjoys striking views of the surrounding area, while a neighbouring gift shop stocks a range of gifts from emblazoned hoodies to mine-ready torches.
The expedition deep into the old seams last 45 minutes, and comes complete with a well-versed tour guide. A soundtrack and atmospheric lighting enhances the experience, and there will be demonstrations of mining techniques, safety measures, and the best methods for fighting rock monsters.
