The most scenic route in Connemara 🌄

Get your camera out as you are about to embark on one of the most scenic drives in the world! There is a photo opportunity at every turn as the Inagh Valley road wends its way through the majestic heather covered mountains of the Twelve Bens from the Maamturks which are separated by the valley and its picturesque lakes. The vista is ever-changing from day to day as the slightest change in the weather is reflected in the lakes and mountains. This is the second leg (30km) of the Western Way which winds its way down from Mam Éan along the valley, past wonderful scenery and then takes a right turn back towards Killary Harbour and Leenaun to where the section ends.

There are numerous lovely walks of varying lengths and it’s a wonderful spot for fishing. If you feel like trying something different there is a wonderful dance movement workshop which takes place at various venues in the area. This is a place to relax and soak up nature.

What lakes are in the Inagh Valley?

When exploring the Inagh Valley you’ll pass the two enchanting lakes of Derryclare and Lough Inagh. To the west, the majestic Twelve Pins (Bens) of Connemara ascend steeply, while to the east, the Maumturk Mountain range completes the breathtaking 360 degree stunning views.

Is fishing permitted in Lough Inagh?

Fishing in the Inagh Valley, Connemara, Galway, is permitted, but there are regulations to observe. Lough Inagh Fishery allows fly fishing exclusively for salmon, grilse, sea trout, and brown trout. Fishing hours typically run from 9:30 am to 7 pm. To fish legally, you need a State fishing license, along with a separate permit specifically for salmon and sea trout. Permit costs and durations vary, so it’s advisable to inquire beforehand.

What is the most beautiful hike in Lough Inagh?

Although there are many amazing hikes possible in the Inagh Valley, Derryclare Horseshoe is one of the most scenic. The route offers a scenic 13.5-kilometer loop, featuring Bencorragh Beg, Bencorragh, and Derryclare. With an ascent of 900 meters and lasting around 6.5 hours, it’s a challenging yet rewarding hike.
