An Taibhdhearc
About the Irish Language Theatre
An Taibhdhearc is the national Irish language theatre of Ireland. It was founded in 1928. The building itself is built on the ruins of the city’s original Augustinian friary. The rear wall incorporates a wall from this friary, including some carved stone window frames. With its location on Middle Street the Taibhdhearc is situated in the heart of the mediaeval Galway. The theatre regularly features musicals, opera and drama. Many luminaries have appeared at the Taibhdhearc, including playwright and novelist Walter Macken, poet Máirtin Ó Direáin, distinguished actress Siobhán McKenna and actor Seán McClory.
