The Omey Races take place annually on the strand at Omey Strand, Claddaghduff in Connemara. The annual summer races have been steadily attracting greater numbers every year for a wonderful day of sand, sea, possibly sun and of course, horse racing. With up to nine races on the card, there's opportunities for young, upcoming jockeys to hone their skills, while providing a great day out for spectators. The first race will be off at 1pm sharp.

Galway’s most popular athletic event, the Streets of Galway 8k Road Race is in it's 30th year the event will include more than 2,000 runners. Starting from South Park in the Claddagh, the race takes in the city centre streets, following a course out to Salthill before finishing with a two kilometre final stretch along with prom.

The Omey Dash is probably the most scenic Tri-Sprint Triathlon in the West. The race  starts with a 0.75km swim on Omey Strand.  Then there is a 24km cycle which takes in the beautiful scenic areas of Omey, Claddaghduff, Leegaun, Streamstown, Cleggan Village, Aughrismore and ends back at Omey Strand where the participants start the 5km run across the beautiful Omey Strand and onto Omey Island.  The race finishes back on the strand again.  Registration is only available through the Triathlon Ireland website:  www.triathlonireland.com and a One Day Licence is needed in advance of the day of the race.  Come along and join in the fun.  Presentation of prizes, food, music, craic and more at Sweeney’s Strand Bar in Claddaghduff after the race.

The Connemara is a 100 mile endurance run with 30 hour limit taking place every August. The course is simply fabulous, taking participants from Clifden through Letterfrack, Leitirgeish, the Inagh alley, Maam Cross, Leenane, Inagh Valley again, then on to Roundstone, Ballyconeely and back to Clfden to complete 100 miles.

The Great Spin Out West (GSOW) is the fastest growing cycling sportive in Ireland. Now in its 5th year, it takes place every August in Connemara, Co. Galway. In just two years over 500 people of all ages and ability have cycled the GSOW with all proceeds going toward Cancer Care West, a west of Ireland focused charity. Starting and finishing in Oughterard in August 2015, the 125 km route takes in some of Galway’s most scenic views.

Premier show for Connemara Ponies in Ireland for breeders and owners from home and overseas. The annual Connemara Pony Festival & Show in Clifden, Co Galway attracts visitors from all over the world. The highlight of the festival is on Thursday and Friday, when the biggest showcase of Connemara Ponies in the world takes place. Ponies compete in in-hand classes, ridden classes, working hunter classes, and a puissance (or high jump) competition. For non-pony enthusiasts, there is a dog show, a domestic arts show and Irish Dancing.

Gaelforce West is the largest one day adventure race of its kind in the world. It is a multi-sport adventure race involving cycling, running, hiking and kayaking. The course of approximately 67km stretches from the stunning Glassilaun beach to Westport. En route there are some significant obstacles to cross, including Killary Harbour and the famous holy mountain of Croagh Patrick. The event is designed for solo competitors, but you can run it with a buddy or training partner.

The Claregalway Agricultural Show features classes for horses/ponies, cattle, sheep and dogs in the outdoor arena. There are indoor arts, crafts, home baking, horticulture, photography and flower arranging classes too. 
There will be live music and novelty events such as the donkey derby, best dressed lady, glamorous granny competitions. The event is affiliated with The Irish Pony Society and The Irish Shows Association. Horses and Ponies are pre-entry only with entries taken on the day for all other classes.

Each year since 1995 an Autumn Gathering has been held in Coole Park, Gort to honour the memory of Lady Augusta Gregory (1852-1932). The cream of world speakers have contributed to the continued success of the weekend. Lady Gregory was one of the co-founders of the Abbey Theatre for which she wrote many plays. She contributed enormously to the Irish Literary Renaissance and fostered the genius of W.B.Yeats . Poets, artists, playwrights and writers of every genre found a welcome in Coole Park. The Lady Gregory Autumn Gathering programme will include lectures, workshops and discussions on literature, creative writing, drama, novels, poetry and local history. A comprehensive list of entertainment items is organised including plays and music. A resident genealogist will help people to find their Irish roots.

This year the Head of the River will be organised by NUIG Boat Club and Tribesmen, and it takes place from the mouth of the lake to a little downstream from the Quincentennial Bridge. The boats race for fours and double sculls starts at 10.30am, the race for single sculls and pairs starts at 1.30pm, and the race for eights and quad sculls starts at 4pm. Hundreds of competitors will be involved, and the best viewing points are Dangan slip or on or near the Quincentennial Bridge.

During the month of May one of Ireland’s most astounding natural wonders is the host of seabirds found nesting at the Cliffs of Moher. Over 60,000 seabirds can be seen at the Cliffs of Moher during the breeding season including Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes and Fulmars nesting at different levels of the cliffs. The Cliffs are a Special Protected Area for seabirds and are also home to other bird species such as Peregrine Falcons, Choughs and Ravens. There is nowhere else on the mainland of Ireland where you can so easily see such a host of nesting seabirds from accessible viewing points on the cliffs of or from the boat of the Cliffs of Moher cruises from Doolin. This is thesecond year of the ‘Connemara Cycle 4 Light Festival’, a partnership between Delphi Adventure Resort and Aware. The Festival will consist of a variety of cycling events for all ages and abilities in support of Aware.

The main event of the Festival will be Aware’s annual Connemara Cycle. There are two cycle routes to choose from: a 65 kilometre route and a 125 kilometre route, both of which start and finish in Delphi and take in the spectacularly beautiful surrounds of Connemara, Co. Galway. Cyclists of all abilities are invited to take part and all funds raised will go towards Aware’s information, education and support services.

The Connemara Green Festival is a relatively new festival in Letterfrack which aims to raise awareness of this ecology and help raise funds for biodiversity actions. The festival includes an ecology walk linking the national park to the seashore, pond dipping, a talk on the history of Letterfrack & a Leave No Trace workshop. There will also be Kayaking & Stand Up paddle boarding available throughout the Saturday and a number of associated events on the Sunday.

The 6th annual Roundstone Bay 8K takes near the village of Roundstone in the heart of Connemara. The course itself consists of a figure of eight loop, beginning and ending in Roundstone village, and taking in some spectacular coastal views along the way. Both runners and walkers are welcome and the organisers have endured to put on an event that will cater to all types of participant. Proceeds from the race will go towards the local RNLI Lifeboat service, a hugely worthwhile charity that relies entirely on donations and fundraising to ensure its viability.
