Celebration of the twinned regions of Galway & Brittany

Brittany Fest Galway 2027 marks a remarkable 52 years of friendship and cultural exchange between Galway and the Breton city of Lorient. Expected to run from 14 to 16 May 2027 (tbc), this vibrant festival celebrates Celtic connections through music, maritime heritage, dance, and family-friendly fun.

The bond between Galway and Brittany is strong; having been formalised over the past half century with the twinning of Galway and Lorient, however it has grown through time as a result of the many characteristics which define our people and our cultures. Galway Brittany Fest showcases and celebrates the strong connections between these two beautiful places.

A little of the history
Established in 1975, the twinning was driven by Michael D. Higgins, now President of Ireland, and Jean-Yves Le Drian, later a French minister. Rooted in shared Celtic culture, the partnership has fostered strong connections through music, sports, and community projects. Galway has long been represented at the prestigious InterCeltique Festival, while sports teams from both cities engage in friendly competitions.

The Galway-Lorient Twinning Committee invites the public to share photos and memories from past events to be showcased during the celebrations. Contributions can be sent to [email protected]. This anniversary promises to honor the past while strengthening ties for the future.

ABOUT THE GALWAY LORIENT TWINNING 🇱🇻 🇫🇷
Established in 1975, the twinning between the cities of Galway and Lorient, Brittany is the oldest in Ireland and the first between a French and Irish town. Recently the twinning committees based in Galway and Lorient have been organising gatherings and events to include as many groups as possible, like universities, businesses, artists, sailors, scientists, musicians, Rugby, Soccer clubs etc. As we approach the 50th anniversary we are looking to gather and share stories and testimonies, and asking how to better prepare for the next decades. So we need you and your help!
