GIAF 2026: What’s On
Theatre, Opera, Circus & Dance
This category represents the festival’s most innovative and physically demanding work. The 2026 lineup is anchored by the return of NoFit State, whose circus spectacular Carnation at Nimmo’s Pier blends high-wire thrills with live music. In traditional theatre, Druid re-examines Dion Boucicault’s The Shaughraun under the direction of Garry Hynes, highlighting the festival’s commitment to reinterpreting the Irish canon. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Stephanie Lake’s Colossus brings a monumental scale to contemporary dance, featuring 50 performers moving in hypnotic unison.

Music: Heineken Big Top Concerts 2026
To date a few headline acts have been announced for the 2026 arts festival. On 17 July 2026, Block Rockin’ Beats with Dec Pierce brings his high-octane fusion of dance anthems and rock classics to the Heineken® Big Top — think No Good (Start the Dance), Smells Like Teen Spirit and Sabotage live with a band.

The Flaming Lips make a triumphant return to the Heineken® Big Top on 16 July 2026 — their only Irish gig next year — bringing their signature kaleidoscopic spectacle, supported by the dreamy indie rock of Mercury Rev. On 18 July, Emeli Sandé and James Morrison share the Big Top in a powerful double-bill, blending soulful passion, soaring vocals, and emotionally charged hits. Sophie Ellis-Bextor brings her distinctive pop glamour to the Heineken Big Top on 22 July 2026, joined by special guest Kate Nash. Fans can expect an energetic, dance-filled show
James (23 July) brings 40 years of iconic anthems — think Sit Down and Laid — for their first-ever Big Top show in Galway, promising euphoric, communal energy. The Saw Doctors (24 July) return with their signature Irish rock-folk spirit, delivering riotous singalongs to classics like I Useta Lover and N17. Bell X1 (25 July) impress with wide-ranging, experimental indie sound — from synth-pop to folk — and songs such as Rocky Took a Lover and The Great Defector. Cian Ducrot (26 July) brings soaring pop anthems and raw piano-led ballads to the Heineken Big Top, blending heartfelt lyrics with stadium-ready hooks, including All For You and I’ll Be Waiting, in a standout GIAF 2026 Sunday performance night show.
For those seeking a different tempo, St. Nicholas’ Church provides a serene backdrop for classical and experimental performances by the Metropolitan Flute Orchestra and the ConTempo Quartet.
Visual Arts
The visual arts programme offers a contemplative counterpoint to the noise of the main stages. A standout highlight for 2026 is Sean Henry’s Presence, featuring monumental sculptures placed in public spaces like Eyre Square and the Claddagh, designed to make the ordinary feel extraordinary. The Printworks Gallery continues its tradition of high-impact photography with Jackie Nickerson’s Stateside and Lorraine Tuck’s Limbo, both of which explore deep themes of identity, geography, and memory.

First Thought Talks
In partnership with the University of Galway, this series serves as the festival’s intellectual engine. It moves beyond aesthetics to tackle pressing global issues including the ethics of AI, climate change, and contemporary geopolitical conflicts. Featuring world-class thinkers like Fintan O’Toole and Lara Marlowe, the talks are designed to spark conversation and challenge the audience’s perspectives on the world outside the theatre doors.

Street Spectacle & Comedy
Ensuring the festival remains accessible to everyone, the Street Spectacle programme brings world-class art directly to the pavement. This year, The Whale Street features a giant whale and ship navigating the city’s medieval corridors, a literal larger-than-life tribute to Moby Dick. On the lighter side, The Laughter Loft at The King’s Head continues to be the home of Irish comedy, featuring top-tier acts like Foil Arms and Hog and Emma Doran.

Festival Garden 🌿
The Festival Garden in Eyre Square returns, offering a lively social hub with food, drinks, DJ sets, and live music. It isn’t just a place to wait for the next show; it’s a curated social space that hosts immersive installations like Without Sin and serves as the launch point for the iconic Silent Disco Walking Tours. It encapsulates the spirit of GIAF: a place where the barriers between performer and public are happily dismantled.
It is open daily from 11am–10pm.
