The Omey Races History 🐴
The Omey Races at Omey Strand, Claddaghduff, have a long and colourful history rooted in local tradition. Originally known as a farmers’ meet, the event featured races for working horses, currach races, sports, bicycle races, and even a car race one year. It was a true community celebration, drawing crowds from across Connemara. The races were suspended in 1963, but in 2001, John Mulkerrin and a dedicated voluntary committee revived the event. Since then, it has grown in scale and popularity, now attracting thoroughbreds and amateur jockeys from all over Ireland. Many professional jockeys got their start here, and each year, Irish emigrants with ties to the area return home to enjoy the unique family atmosphere of race day at Omey.
