About 126 Gallery

Established in 2005, 126 Artist-Run Gallery is a pivotal, artist-led nonprofit organization in Galway’s visual arts scene. This gallery is managed voluntarily by a dedicated Board of Directors, consisting of professional artists and curators. It has flourished over 17 years with support from Galway City Council, The Arts Council of Ireland, and Creative Ireland.

126’s mission is to offer high-quality contemporary exhibitions and cultural programs that are free and accessible to everyone. These programs include artist talks, lectures, workshops, residencies, studio spaces, and skill development opportunities. The gallery is committed to supporting artists at all career stages, emphasizing emerging contemporary practices and fostering local and national partnerships.

A core aspect of 126 is its democratic structure, where power flows from its membership to the Board of Directors. The Board, representing the membership, ensures that the gallery’s activities align with its aims. This relationship underpins the gallery’s success and longevity, providing members with a platform to connect with a broader network of professional artists. The gallery boasts around 200 members at any given time.

126 also manages Barton Studios, a satellite space on Saint Francis Street in Galway City. Barton Studios offers Galway artists a much-needed, affordable, and secure workspace in the city center.

To fulfill its mission, 126 operates in five key areas: providing an exhibition space for contemporary art, researching artist-led organizations, running a residency program, producing publications, and maintaining studio spaces. Recently, 126 expanded to its largest space yet, enhancing its capacity to support and showcase innovative art.
