
Athenry Walled Towns Day 2026
Celebrating the towns medieval roots 🛡
This one-day festival, is expected to take place from 1pm to 5pm on 16th August 2026 with a schedule of activities that highlights the Anglo-Norman influences on Athenry’s medieval town. The Community Park, Athenry Castle, Heritage Center, and Community Hall are the locations for the event.
Athenry Walled Towns Day is intended to be open to everyone, enjoyable, and free to attend. The festival provides a platform for regional craft and artisan food manufacturers to display their goods while also reflecting the medieval past of Athens in its program.
Falconry, arts and crafts, try your hand at archery, war reenactments, weapon displays, kid-friendly craft stations, medieval music, storytelling, and puppet shows are just a few of the exhibits.

Numerous talks, kid-friendly craft sessions, and musical performances take place in the Great Hall at Athenry Castle. Up to 5000 people attend the event on any given day, which typically takes place around the start of Heritage Week in the final week of August. The Heritage Council and Galway County Council support the event, one of numerous Walled Towns Days that are conducted around Ireland.
Since 2006, Athenry’s Walled Towns Day has been organized by the Athenry Heritage Centre in collaboration with Galway County Council.
