Rowing races on the River Corrib
This year’s Galway Regatta will take place at the NUIG grounds at Dangan. Galway’s oldest rowing regatta celebrates its 141st anniversary, and once again entries from all four provinces with many of the top rowing clubs in Ireland are expected to compete.
Although Galway Rowing Club hosts this popular annual competition, the regatta is a culmination of the efforts of the rowing clubs of Galway including NUIG, Tribesmen, Galway Rowing Club, Colaiste na Coribe, the Bish, and the Jes, all of whom will be taking part this year.
Getting to Galway regatta & parking
You can park at the Colaiste Iognaid Rowing Club and travel the 1.5 km (one mile) up the riverbank to Dangan slip for best viewing.
Alternately, park at the sports complex in Dangan. Drive north towards Moycullen/Oughterard from the University or UCHG (hospital) to get there. Take the first right after the traffic lights at Dangan Business Park.
A little ways down this road, on the left, there will be parking. From there, it will take you around 400 meters to reach the riverfront.

Background to the regatta
Corrib Rowing and Yachting Club (1864) and the Commercial Boat Club (1875), which competed in rowing races, gave rise to the regatta, which has been one of the city’s most colorful sporting events since its founding in 1884 on the grounds of Menlo Castle. Rowing on the Corrib reached its pinnacle in 1929 when the Emmets won the IARU senior eights, a feat they repeated in 1931. These races later became known as the Galway Regatta.
The tradition of rowing in Galway has survived, and local clubs like Galway, Tribesmen, NUIG, the Bish, and the Jes will be out in full force on Sunday hoping to continue their great seasons in this well-liked local competition.
