Japanese Film Festival

10 - 27 Apr, 2024, Galway Events Calendar

The Japanese Film Festival Ireland has officially returned, marking its 15th edition this April with a captivating lineup set to delight cinema enthusiasts. From now until April 27th at the EYE Cinema, Wellpark Retail Park, Galway, audiences in Galway can immerse themselves in the best of Japanese cinema with 49 screenings of 19 films.

This year’s program promises a diverse selection, featuring everything from acclaimed dramas to crowd-pleasing anime hits. Among the highlights are the Irish premieres of exceptional new dramas such as Egoist, Great Absence, Ichiko, Remembering Every Night, and Shadow of Fire. For those seeking lighter fare, there’s the time-loop office satire Mondays: See You ‘This’ Week! and the playful horror-comedy Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Anime enthusiasts won’t want to miss the first Irish screenings of titles like Lonely Castle in the Mirror and Komada: A Whisky Family. Additionally, the festival offers a special insight into Japanese culture with films such as Tsugaru Lacquer Girl and Yudo: The Way of the Bath.

A special tribute to the late Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto will be held with screenings of his final concert film Opus alongside Hirokazu Koreeda’s award-winning Monster, featuring Sakamoto’s last film score. Classic cinema lovers can enjoy Shinji Somai’s acclaimed coming-of-age drama Typhoon Club.

For longtime attendees, the festival remains a cherished experience, offering the opportunity to see these films on the big screen and witness the festival team’s ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence.
