Joyce Country Challenge Walks
Connemara walking event ⛰
The 18th annual Joyce Country Challenge is expected to take place on Saturday, 18th July 2026, offering walkers a rare chance to explore one of Ireland’s most breathtaking hidden landscapes. Set in the heart of the Joyce Country, this event showcases the stunning circuit around Lough Nafooey, featuring the rugged plateau of Maumtrasna and the commanding Devil’s Mother. Walkers will enjoy panoramic views of the Maamturks, Mweelrea, Killary Harbour, the Sheefry Hills, and the Western Lakes.
Typical walking schedule 🥾
There are four walks to suit different levels. The Challenge (A walk) is a demanding, 30km self-navigated route with 1,750m ascent, recommended only for experienced, self-sufficient hikers (start time 06:30–07:30). Walk B is a 20km guided route with 750m ascent, ideal for intermediate walkers (start 08:00). Walk C offers a gentler introduction to hillwalking, taking in the hill behind Finny Hall and finishing at Kilbride (start 10:00). The new Walk D is a scenic, family-friendly 5km road walk with views of Lough Mask and Lough Nafooey (start 12:00).
Registration is available on the day (cash only) or in advance by email up to Wednesday, 15th July. This is a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of the west through a well-organised community challenge.
