Tonnta – celebrating the Irish language in Galway
Galway, Ireland’s festival city, has a new festival – Tonnta – celebrating the Irish language and Galway as a bilingual city. First held in 2024 and expected to return in 2027, Gaillimh le Gaeilge, which works to enhance the visibility and audibility of the Irish language in Gaillimh | Galway will host the festival once again in collaboration with Galway City Council, Fáilte Ireland, Plean Teanga Chathair na Gaillimhe and the Galway Culture Company.

What to expect
Tonnta 2027, Galway’s vibrant Irish language festival, is expected to return from January 28 – 31 2027 as part of the St. Brigid’s Day bank holiday weekend. As Ireland’s only bilingual city, Galway invites everyone to celebrate the Irish language, regardless of fluency, through an inclusive and fun-filled programme.
The festival offers something for all ages and interests, with bilingual concerts, workshops, food tours, and family-friendly events hosted at iconic venues like An Taibhdhearc, Town Hall Theatre, The Mick Lally Theatre, and PorterShed a Dó. Highlights include a free Céilí Mór in Eyre Square, accompanied by fire shows.
2027 Festival Highlights
From Brigid’s Day celebrations of craft, storytelling, and rhythm to family events, comedy, workshops, and cabaret, Tonnta offers something for everyone — whether fluent in Irish or simply curious.

Other standout events expected include a bilingual food and whiskey tour, the premiere of an Irish language commission, and a family-oriented Lá na bPáistí.
