Artisan restaurant in the Galway Gaeltacht

30 minutes west of Galway city and conveniently based beside the headquarters of TG4 TV studios, POTA Café is a gem in an area with few dining options. The cafe is housed in a landmark thatched two-storey building, once known as Tigh Jonny Sheain pub, and you can’t miss in when taking the road west towards Carraroe and Rossaveal.

The menu practically writes itself with fresh salads grown in An Garrai Glas across the street, the finest butchery from McGeough’s of Oughterard, and world-class goat’s cheese, seafood, and fudge straight from the Aran Islands. So, picture yourself feasting on slow-cooked hot-pots like Connemara lamb tagine, or Eggs Benedict with Feeney’s pulled bacon collar, hollandaise, and sourdough toast; crisp sourdough baguettes, perhaps stuffed with roast free-range chicken, Aran Islands goats’ cheese, or Kylemore Farmhouse cheese, with leaves and beetroot from Beechlawn Organic Farm. Fresh fish from Ros an Mhíl, shellfish from Kelly’s, and Dillisk brown soda go into the POTA soup.
