Powers Thatched Pub & Restaurant

Traditional Irish Restaurant in Oughterard 🍴

Powers Thatched Pub and Restaurant has recently undergone restoration and has been lovingly brought back to life. The original bar was repaired with recovered materials and remains as it was throughout the life of the bar.

There are open fireplaces with the aroma of peat smoke, decorated with warm lights and all kinds of unusual curios. Tall stools, barrel tables and dark wooden furniture only enhance the traditional ambience. Several picture-perfect scones and cakes are displayed on embroidered linen behind a polished bar. Through the tiny original windows, a sunny courtyard with trestle tables makes for a wonderful quiet dining area in Summer.

Head chef Cillian Hanrahan approaches his meals with a provinance-led, wild, and free-range philosophy. The incredibly skilled Jess Murphy of Kai in Galway has helped conceive concise and popular menu.

Seafood chowder with Dillisk scones and ling fingers in buttermilk and panko breadcrumbs are two delectable options. In the sun-trap courtyard, you could have local charcuterie or chicken liver paté. You could also order a lamb burger on flatbread with preserved lemon, stormy port, and apricot chutney, as well as courgette chips. Vegetarians will be pleased by the specials, which include quinoa cakes with smokey roasted romeneso, caramelized onions, and grilled asparagus.

Old and new world wines from France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, and New Zealand are available on the wine list, however this bar is best known for its Guinness. Additionally, evening Trad sessions occur regularly.
