FAQs about Galway Pottery Classes
I’ve never done pottery before; is that okay?
Absolutely! The majority of students are total beginners. The instructors are experts at breaking down the process into simple, manageable steps.
Can I take my creations home?
Yes! Once your pieces have been bisque-fired, glazed, and fired again in the kiln, they are yours to keep. These are fully functional, food-safe stoneware ceramics.
Is there an age limit?
Classes are primarily aimed at adults and teens. However, specific family workshops or kids’ camps are often scheduled during school holidays—check the website for the latest schedule.
Pottery classes for beginners
In business for almost 40 years, Galway Pottery Classes is located at 3 Lower Merchants Road and offers pottery classes to the public. Before opening his pottery studio in the heart of Galway, Laurence O’Kelly earned a degree in sculpting from the Belfast College of Art. During his 40 years of teaching, he has worked with kids of various ages. Many of today’s college students started their academic careers as youngsters and are now returning as adults.
Tip: Pottery is messy but magical! Wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting splattered with “slip” (liquid clay), and keep your fingernails short—it makes wheel throwing much easier. If you’re looking for a unique date night or a creative activity for a rainy Galway day, their one-off “Taster” sessions are incredibly popular and fill up weeks in advance.
