Trail Info & Visitor Essentials
Trail Length: 16km total loop (Plan for 1.5 to 3 hours).
Included Gear: All rentals come with a safety helmet and a basic toolkit.
Terrain: Rated “Intermediate” (Blue/Red Grade) with rocky single-track and wooden boardwalks.
Note: The trail is located within a Coillte forest; please respect the “Leave No Trace” principles and be mindful of weather conditions as the boardwalks can be slippery when wet.

Is the trail suitable for complete beginners?
The trail is graded as intermediate. While fit beginners can enjoy it, it does feature steep climbs and technical rocky sections. If you aren’t comfortable on uneven ground, consider an E-bike to help with the elevation.
What should I wear?
Wear breathable athletic clothing (layers are best). Padded cycling shorts are highly recommended! Sturdy sneakers with good grip are essential; avoid loose-fitting trousers that could get caught in the bike chain.
Are there facilities on-site?
There is a large car park and the hire shop itself. There are no public toilets or cafes at the trailhead, so be sure to use the facilities in Oughterard before you arrive and bring plenty of water.

Derroura Mountain Bike Trail is one of Coilte’s custom-built and designed trails in the beautiful setting of Connemara in the West of Ireland. With an ever increasing interest in outdoor sports and activities for individuals or families, Coillte have invested in purpose built trails for mountain bikers. The trails are designed with safety in mind and are laid out in such a way as to reduce the risk of interference with other forest users and also to control the speed of the mountain biker. Derroura is a relatively easy trail to ride, with nothing too technical. It can however, be quite tiring in areas as there is quite a lot of climbing along the way. Derroura MTB Hire is situated right on the trail, therefore saving you hassle and giving you more time to enjoy the trail itself. Further facilities include shower and WC, so you leave feeling even more refreshed after your day on the mountain.
Derroura MTB trail is just one of the four purpose-built trails by Coillte with others situated in Ballyhoura, Portumna and Ballinasloe. Once you have ridden the trails through Derroura, we are sure it will become one of your favourites and will be back for more adventure.
Location of Derroura MTB Hire
From Galway, take the N59 Heading west towards Oughterard and Clifden. Derroura Mountain Bike Trail is located approx 7 kms to the West of Ougherard between the N59 and Lough Corrib, at the gateway to Connemara.

Tip: The best view in Galway is at the highest point of the Derroura trail—stop for a photo at the top of the “boardwalk” section where you can see Lough Corrib stretching out below. If it has rained recently, lower your tire pressure slightly for better grip on the rocks.

Location: The hire center is located directly at the entrance to the Derroura Forest trail, about 10 minutes west of Oughterard on the N59 towards Clifden. Look for the trailhead signs on the left-hand side.
