Ever since the arrival of the Continental Christmas Market in Eyre Square over 12 years ago, Galwegians have continued the tradition of transforming the city into a Christmas wonderland for the month of December. Christmas 2024 will be no different with the scale of the events being held expected to be bigger and better than ever before.
Here is a list of just some of the main attractions and activities to enjoy in Galway this festive season.
Galway Continental Christmas Market
November 2024 – January 2025
The renowned Galway Continental Christmas Market will be running for an extended period in 2024 from November 2024 into the new year until early January 2025 and offers a range of festive delights in the heart of Galway City at Eyre Square.
Open from noon to 8pm, Monday to Wednesday, and 10am-10pm from Thursday to Sunday, the market offers more than 50 wooden chalets packed with European Christmas gifts, artisan food products, Santa’s Grotto, a 32 meter tall Big Wheel and a fairground carousel. Lively and fun, with performers, puppet shows, storytelling, live performances and carol singers, it attracted more than 600,000 visitors when last run. For more click here.

Christmas Wonderland at Loughwell Farm Park

Visitors to Loughwell Farm Park this Christmas will experience a blizzard of festive cheer as they step into our Barn Yard Theatre which will be transformed into a magical Winter Wonderland for Santa, the elves and his magic balloon clown to feel at home. For children, there will be face painting, animal balloon making from the clown, letter writing to Santa and a magical trip through the miniature working Christmas village. Visit Santa’s Cabin at Galway Christmas Market

What better way to top off a visit to the Christmas Market than making a visit to the man in red and his elves in their very own Christmas cabin. Open on weekends during the Christmas Market, you can awaken the magic of Christmas in your little ones where they’ll also receive an age appropriate gift and take magical lasting memories home from their big day out. Christmas Day Swim for Cope

The Christmas Day Swim (or super quick dip for most of us!) is a long running tradition for the people of Galway. Over the years it has grown into an enormously popular event, especially for those who are home for the festive period or visiting the city during the holidays. Held on Christmas morning from 10am to 1pm at Blackrock beach and diving tower in Salthill, the Christmas Day Swim helps support local charity COPE who provide invaluable services to the homeless, victims of domestic abuse and the elderly. Registration is €10 for one person or €30 for the family or donate what you can on the day.

Loughrea Icebreakers Christmas Day Swim

Grit your teeth and take a leap into the crystal-clear waters of Loughrea Lake on Christmas morning at 11.30am at Long Point, Lough Rea. Join dozens of other fun-loving people and feel revitalised like never before by starting off Christmas Day with a wonderful act of generosity. All funds raised support the activities of CASA Loughrea who organise monthly social afternoons for people with disabilities from all over county Galway. For more click here.

Live Music Gigs in Galway this Christmas
December 2024 / January 2025
If you’re looking for a great night out enjoying live music in Galway this Christmas there are always a few unmissable gigs to see. in 2023 for example Damien Dempsey played Leisureland on December 9, 2023. Leisureland also played host to legendary Glen Hansard and Bell X1 for what were two of the festive seasons most highly anticipated gigs. Galway Skates
Unconfirmed for 2024
Galway Skates is unlikely to take place again during Christmas 2024 due to issues obtaining insurance. In normal times Galway Skates offers the wonderfully festive activity of ice-skating overlooking the Salthill Promenade and Galway Bay. Located at Leisureland, Salthill just 1 mile from Galway City, the ice rink is open from November until early January. Suitable for kids from 4 years old it is a real Christmas treat for young and old. Treat your kids to the thrills and possibly spills of a genuine ice-skating experience on the 600m2 ice rink.
