Fáinne Chamuis, also known as “The Big O,” is a striking 4-metre-high corten steel sculpture nestled in the scenic landscape of Camus, Connemara, County Galway. The sculpture stands as a bold yet harmonious addition to the area, framing stunning views of the Connemara landscape, with its mountains and the sea. This site is steeped in history, linked to the Irish revolutionary and writer, Pádraic Pearse. Pearse, a leader of the 1916 Easter Rising, spent his summers in nearby Rosmuc, a place of reflection and inspiration for him. His cottage, with its sweeping views of the Maamturk Mountains and the Twelve Bens, still stands today as a testament to his connection to this rugged and beautiful region.
The sculpture also bears a powerful inscription from Dermot Ryan, a pupil of Pearse’s, who accompanied him to Connemara in 1915. It reads: “The Twelve Pins came in sight and Pearse waved his hand here and there over the land, naming lake, mountain and district away to the Joyce Country under its purple mist.”
