Knockbrack Megalithic Tomb

Burial chamber overlooking Sellerna Bay in Connemara

Knockbrack megalithic or chambered tomb sits overlooking Sellerna beach and bay within walking distance of the village of Cleggan in west Connemara. This narrow burial chamber is covered with a large roof stone measuring 4 meters by 1 meter and is perched atop a small group of pointed stones, none greater than 1 meter in height.

The tomb, with the island of Inisbofin visible off in the distance, was given the name “Druid’s Altar,” during the time of Ireland’s Celtic cultural revival and most notable in the writing of W.B Yeats and Lady Gregory. The name “Druid’s Altar” still exists on old Ordnance Survey maps from the 18th century. It is believed that these types of monument served as places for burying the dead and for religious ceremonies. Markings on the capstone are believed to have been etched out for the purpose of channelling a body’s blood towards the earth.
