Tully
Scenic coastal village on the Renvyle Peninsula
The quaint seaside village of Tully lies on the northern shores of the Renvyle Peninsula in the heart of Connemara. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with a stunning backdrop of the Mweelrea mountains in Co. Mayo and the Twelve Bens, Tully has long been a destination for those seeking the wild and rugged beauty of the Irish coastline.
It is a charming coastal settlement and the ideal base from which to explore the many wonders of Connemara and the surrounding Renvyle area. The village is unique for its immediate proximity to the water, with its own small beach, Trá na mBean (Ladies Beach), located just a stone’s throw from the village centre. Tully is also home to the famous Teach Ceoil (Music House), where visitors can experience traditional Irish culture through music and dance.
For those who enjoy active holidays, you can go horseback riding at the local equestrian centre, offering the perfect way to experience the Atlantic shoreline. The nearby Tully Pier is a favourite spot for both locals and visitors, providing sheltered corners and rock pools that are ideal for children to spend a day exploring. The pier also offers spectacular views across the water to the mountains of South Mayo.
Tully is perfectly positioned for hikers and nature lovers. It provides a different and unique perspective of the Connemara coastline compared to the inland trails. The village is just a short distance from Connemara National Park in Letterfrack, where the terrain changes from coastal sands to expansive bogs and heathlands.
This part of the country is deeply rooted in tradition, and you will find that the village maintains a quiet, authentic atmosphere. For those looking for historical sites, the ruins of Renvyle Castle and the grand Kylemore Abbey are only a short drive away, offering a glimpse into the opulent and often turbulent history of the region.
Just a few minutes from the village, you will find the historic Renvyle House Hotel, which was once the home of Oliver St. John Gogarty and a retreat for W.B. Yeats. After a day of exploring the rock pools at Tully Pier or walking the coastal roads, the local pubs are the perfect place to enjoy a quiet drink and soak in the Connemara atmosphere.
