The Sunken Church of Inis Oírr
St. Caomhán’s church
Teampall Caomhán, otherwise known as St. Caomhán’s church (or St. Cavan in english) dating from the 10th century is located opposite the airstrip on Inis Oírr, in the island’s graveyard. Popularly known as the ‘Sunken Church’, the ruins are exceptionally well preserved and easily accessed for close exploration, however the chancel is the only part of the building that may still be seen today.
Over the centuries the church succumbed to the drifting sands blown across the island and became completely submerged until it was excavated by the islanders who continue to maintain it to this day.
St. Caomhán was brother to St. Kevin of Glendalough, and is the patron saint of Inis Oírr whose feast day is June 14th.
To the north-east of the church is St. Caomhán’s grave which now has a roof to protect it from the elements.
