Portumna Forest Park
One of the best forest parks in Ireland 🌳
Portumna Forest Park covers almost 600 hectares and has been developed as a public amenity over the years by Coillte, with beautiful forest and lakeshore walks, where the silence is broken only by the sound of birds, and your companions are the wary and the curious fallow deer. There is a viewing tower along the nature trail where one can get a bird’s eye view of the forest, lake and lakeshore.
Park Wildlife 🦌
Sixteen species of wild mammals reside within the park including large numbers of Fallow deer, some fox and badger and the elusive pine marten, a native dweller which until recently was on the verge of extinction.
Bird life abounds in the general area and at least eighty five different types breed here. The changing seasons of the year see the area offering sustenance to migratory birds from Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland and Africa. The area is truly a delight for the visitor with an interest in flowers, shrubs and trees, many of which are rare and uncommon elsewhere in Europe.
